2 (or 3) bucket method
The 2 (or 3)-bucket method is used to wash a car while reducing the risk of scratches and swirl marks.
We actually use 3 buckets:
- One bucket with shampoo
- One bucket with clean rinse water
- One bucket for wheels
After washing a panel, the wash mitt is rinsed in the clean-water bucket before going back into the shampoo. This removes dirt and grit instead of dragging it back across the paint. Grit guards in the buckets help trap dirt at the bottom.
Why it matters
Using only one bucket reintroduces dirt to the paint, which can cause fine scratches over time. The 2-bucket method keeps the wash process cleaner and safer—especially important for polished or ceramic-coated vehicles.
It takes a little more time, but it helps keep the paint looking better for longer.
Decontamination Wash
A decontamination wash, combined with a clay bar, removes bonded dirt that normal washing can’t, such as brake dust, tar, and industrial fallout. This step leaves the paint truly clean and is essential before polishing or applying any protection, as it prevents contaminants from being dragged across the surface.
